On March 17, 2021, the IRS announced that the federal income tax filing due date for individuals for the 2020 tax year will be automatically extended from April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021. Please note that the due date for April 15 estimated tax payments, such as first quarter 2021 estimated tax payments, has NOT been extended. Estimated tax payments must still be made by April 15, 2021.
The Kansas Department of Revenue and Missouri Department of Revenue have also automatically extended the due date for 2020 individual income tax return payments and filing to May 17, 2021.
The City of Kansas City, Missouri, has extended the due date for the 2020 Wage Earner Earnings Tax and 2020 Profits Earnings Tax returns to May 17, 2021.
Other states may or may not choose to extend their 2020 income tax return deadlines. For current information, check with the individual state agencies at https://www.taxadmin.org/state-tax-agencies.
