When will the IRS issue a legitimate CP53E notice?
- The IRS will issue a CP53E notice when a taxpayer is due a refund, and
- The IRS does not have any taxpayer bank account information, the banking information it has is incorrect, or the refund deposit attempt was rejected by the bank.
- A taxpayer should respond to a legitimate notice by logging into his/her IRS account at https://www.irs.gov and updating the banking information online. IRS employees are not permitted to take banking information over the phone.
We have received notification that the IRS has issued many CP53E notices in error.
- These notices request banking information for direct deposit of a refund when there is no refund due.
- The IRS is not recommending further action if the notice is received in error.
In addition, there are many fraudulent CP53E notices being sent with a QR code that will direct you to a dishonest website.
Action to take if you receive a notice:
- Do NOT scan the QR code on the letter as it could be fraudulent.
- Please click here to securely upload a copy of any IRS notice you receive, and we will help you determine whether a response is necessary.
Please do not hesitate to communicate with your Keller & Owens contact if you have any questions.
